THE THIRD REVOLUTION OF WASTE
A product’s life cycle has always been linear, quick born, and straight to the long dying process. What if we can make it into a sustainable cycle by connecting two ends, turn the kitchen waste into mycelium brick for architecture, biofuel for the garbage truck, heat for greenhouses, and clean water for firefly restoration.

ISSUE
Taipei city has three incinerating plants, and the one in Neihu has exceeded the 25 years lifespan and now facing two options which are retirement or upgrade to other functions.
SITE
The site is in Huluzhou industrial area, which is isolated by some natural and artificial barriers on its four sides, including a highway, river, metro overpass, and a truck bridge. The land has been haunted by these gigantic structures and eventually becomes somewhere no one wants to get close to, although there are some residents live within it.
CONCEPT
Circular Economy
Through the concept of the circular economy, aim to maximize the usage of compost. This new process not only connects different areas of industries but also connects the government, research institutions, and NGOs.
After the fermentation process, the resources are separated:
Solid
Send it to mycelium farm (old smokestack) and transform it into mycelium brick for the architecture industry.
Liquid
Flow-through the algae photoreactor locating on top of the glass bridge which connects the old and new building. Ten days later, harvest the algae and process it into biofuel to power the waste-collecting trucks. The filtered clean water irrigates the urban farm, and also provides firefly lab fresh flowing water.
Gas
Store in a tank, and pump to generators, providing energy for the facility and surrounding residents. The waste heat can help the urban farm to stay warm.
